The Growing SMEs marketplace grew out of BiD Challenge 2005, the first international business plan competition. 18 entrepreneurs from all over the world came to Amsterdam to pitch their companies to investors. Since that year international SME marketplaces have been organised on an annual basis and have grown consistently in terms of participants and the quality of business plans.

Regional events such as Growing SMEs Latin America and Growing SMEs East Africa now allow for more regional focus and networking.
